I rarely watch the coverage of the Olympics - never having been interested in (most) spectator sports. Although since seeing Mark Spitz win his gold medals, I do sometimes tune in for the swimming...
The fact is, China has an appauling record on human rights, surpassing even Saudi, Kuwait, and Iran. The Chinese have been launching aggressive raids on gay bars, saunas and clubs in advance of the Olympics in an attempt to remove any trace of gayness from the city. And they have terrible air quality which is really unfit for athletes.
I can think of no reason - either as an athlete or as a spectator - to go to Beijing.
The protests in France and Britain are really just the start of a wave of protest against an event that should never have happened. What were the Olympic Committee thinking when they chose China for this event?
