Bigots are often forced to construct tortuous arguments to support their position. While Obama has softened his stance from "I will repeal DADT" to "I'll talk to the generals and see if we can't possibly get rid of it at some time as yet undetermined in the future", the opposition to removal of this code has to deal with the many officers and ex-officers who support removal, and a general disinterest in the outcome from the rank and file. In polls, most career military acknowledge they've served with men and women they knew were gay, and it didn't bother them.

So today a band of retired officers came up with this:

NEW YORK — More than 1,000 retired military officers, including several who were top commanders, are urging President Barack Obama and Congress to maintain the law that bars gays from serving openly in the armed forces.

Obama is consulting with the Pentagon on the issue and says he supports eventual repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which prohibits gays in the military from being open about their sexual orientation. A bill that would allow gays to serve openly has been introduced in Congress.

A statement issued by the retired officers Tuesday said repeal of the policy would “have adverse effects on the willingness of parents who lend their sons and daughters to military service, and eventually break the All-Volunteer Force.”

So parents LEND their children to the military? And presumably those children have no say in whether they serve or not? And the opposition of the PARENTS of serving military will bring about the end of the volunteer army in this country?

I can only thank God that these people are already retired. To think of them leading anything is scary. How the hell did they get to be officers in the first place?
