Every year when I tell friends and work colleagues that I've been to a square dance convention, they ask me the same thing: "Did your team win?". I explain it's not a competition. Only this year the straight Nationals IS having a competition. Of sorts. I just read over the rules... I received them on April 1st so I'm wondering if I should be taking them seriously? I particularly liked the first requirement to be a judge. Sadly, there are plenty of square dancers who would fail to qualify! LOL

Rules & Process of Open Competition

A) Dancing Level will be Mainstream. Any calls from the Mainstream list may and will be called during the
competition.
B) Team square dancing Open Competition will be (15) fifteen minutes of Patter.
C) Each team/square must be in constant movement during the Competition.
D) If any Team’s/Square’s Judge finds the participants of his/her square have broken down, the judge will
then raise a yellow sign and give the square/team a count of ten (10) out loud to the beat of the music to
allow the participants the time to get back into place. If they can fix themselves and get back dancing with
out forming lines, they can continue the competition.
This will only be allowed to happen (1) one time for each square/team.
If they can not, the Judge will Red Sign his/her square/team letting them know they should leave the floor as
their participation in the competition is then done.
E) Each square must resolve back with the same partners in the same spot they started. (Ex: Head couples are
in the head spot, Couple #2 is in the number two spot and so on.)
F) If after 15 Minutes, more than one square is remaining the Competition callers will call for another 5
minutes but will increase the difficulty level (Still Mainstream Level).
G) In the event of a tie, the square/team that did not get yellow signed at all will win. If they both have or
have not gotten yellow signed, they will dance for another 5 minutes with even more increase level of
difficulty (still at mainstream level), but the first square to yellow sign will get 2nd place.

Square Judging -

1) Judges must be able to Count to (10) ten out loud to the beat of the music.
2) Each square will have (1) one Square Judge
3) A Square Judge must not live in the same state as the any of the Participants/Competitor in the square they
are judging or the square will be disqualified.
4) In the event of an all callers square this square must have (2) two judges watching it.

Sweden just passed same-sex marriage laws. No, not Sweden, NY, but Sweden as in a small, cold, but progressive country in Europe! The rights of gay men and lesbians are now recognized in the following countries:

  • The Netherlands

  • Belgium

  • Spain

  • Norway

  • Sweden

  • South Africa

  • Canada

But sadly, not our own, at least nationally (although two states do recognize us).
