Salt Lake City
Aug. 3rd, 2009 06:46 pmHere I am in the home of the Mormons! So far I haven't seen anyone that looks like they're wearing magic underwear, but maybe it's not that visible. I'll check by the pool later.
The flight was unremarkable, the transfer to the hotel (an Embassy Suites) was easy, if a little strange. In theory, they have a free shuttle service. When we called to get the shuttle, they told us to get a taxi instead, and they'd refund us! (I'm traveling with a woman from work, not Bill).
The hotel is reasonably well appointed, with a small pool, hot tub and sauna area, plus a smallish gym. The gym machines are connected to cable, so I enjoyed my 20 minute run much more than usual! A cooked-to-order breakfast is also included.
At 5:30 they have a "manager's hospitality hour" with free booze. This is contra-indicated on my weightwatchers diet. I am going to treat myself to one drink per night at the freebie hour! I just have to take off a few points of food per day. A small price to pay!
There is however a gas station across the road from the hotel, with a convience store of sorts - so I was able to buy some soup and cola. The suite has a microwave, and I brought bowls and silverware (plasticware actually) so I'll be able to cook something calorie controlled rather than go to the restaurant. Just as well, since this is an industrial area, with little in the way of eateries nearby, and I don't have a car.
I am in the middle of a Free Ride Zone on the light rail, though the nearest stop is a punishing (in this heat) three LONG city blocks away. Even so, I'll give it a whirl. It runs up to 11pm. That'll probably get me to somewhere with more food choices.
I'm on a course 8:30am to 5pm Tu, Weds, Th, and 8:30am to 12 noon Friday, so I don't expect to do much touring. I have a zero desire to see 'the temple' which everyone tells me is the main tourist attraction.
Wireless internet, with a reasonable signal strength, is available in the room - it's included.
Many people warned me about the 'dryness' of SLC - yet in the hotel there is a free happy hour, and at the gas station across the road, the freezers are full of cases of beer - so I'm not sure what the deal is with alcohol.
