Corruption at UNM? No surprise here...
Nov. 5th, 2009 08:01 amAnother embarrassment for our university. Allegedly (as real reporters say) the football coach here got into a fist fight with one of his assistants. It turns out that the administration then went into cover-up mode. Rather than actually follow the HR rules, the athletics dept appointed a student-employee to investigate. She interviewed people, took statements, and then the department tried to resolve the issue internally. Meanwhile, said student shredded the interview notes before handing over the mess to the HR department to try and sort out.
Coming from the UK, where there is no money tied to university sports, I am continually confused by the lavish pay, the faked student grades, and all the other trappings of what appears to be a corrupt system at most major universities. Why the big love affair with professional sports?
This comes after a major issue last year, when after freezing hiring and pay increases, the university trundled ahead spending $64 million on a facelift for one of their stadiums, which is actually REDUCING the number of seats available. If this university was a business, the board would be fired, the SEC would be investigating, and we'd be filing for bankruptcy.
