Bill has since 2001 been studying British English. He's really quite advanced - the times when I have to stop a British movie to explain the dialect are now few. However, my sister-in-law sent him an English test today. This is really post-graduate English, course #415. I'm afraid he didn't do too well with the sentence:

Get on the blower and spread a few bob about and see if any grasses know the SP

Well, not really, but I am very happy to have found http://www.feedbooks.com - a source for public domain e-books. Most of the books are in ePub format, but thanks to Calibre, an open-source e-book manager, I am able to download from FeedBooks, then convert to mobi (Kindle-compatible) format. This only works for open-sourced content of course - no DRM breaking here - nothing to see.

The site has a rich selection of works (especially science fiction/fantasy) from various modern authors; plus all the classics that are out of copyright, even under America's hugely over-reaching standard (75 years since the death of the author). H G Wells has thankfully been dead long enough, along with some other authors. And some have donated books to the public domain.

Such a lot of content, and I don't have to pay Amazon a penny!
