On the perils of the English language
May. 4th, 2010 01:17 pmThe Two Ronnies - Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett - were British comedians. Each had their own shows and careers, but are most remembered for the Two Ronnies series of TV shows. Corbett was 'petite' while Barker was bearish; some of the comedy stemmed simply from their physical differences. However, this sketch is one of their most famous, examining some of the foibles of the English language in a hardware store (actually, more like an old-style mercantile). Such stores most likely do not exist anymore anywhere in Britain - long since having given way to Tescos big box stores (akin to Walmart and Lowes here). Anyway, I was talking with my brother today and this sketch came up in conversation. Needless to say, YouTube had it! I'm sorry that some of the jokes here may be somewhat foreign to my American friends...
