Cold Fusion, version 2.
Jul. 2nd, 2008 10:12 amWouldn't it be nice to get something for nothing? Well, when Cold Fusion came along everyone thought so. It turned out to be junk science of course.
The latest candidate for title of Junk Science of the Year is Blacklight. Except some scientists, even at NASA, are saying there are some unexplained effects in the experiments. Many more are calling it a fraud or worse.
Most of the scientific community is mocking this research - they point to errors in the math, un-warranted assumptions, and the fact that if this was true, it would undermine the basic principles of quantum mechanics. Fair enough - except history is peppered with scientists who turned accepted theories on their heads; and similar 'it can't be true because we already have a theory' reactions from the scientific community. Personally I'm underwhelmed by their website, with poor English grammar, broken links, and flash animations that fail to load
We'd all like to think at a time of spiking oil prices and depressed economic conditions that the guy has it right. I think we'll have to wait a while though to find out. It's certainly an intriguing idea, but it may be yet another 'rabbit out of a hat' conjuring trick by an unscrupulous individual. Sadly, I don't understand any of the basic quantum mechanics and math needed to make any kind of value judgement (English) judgment (American).
